Fiona's Fantastic Flying Machine

I finished my piece for the Color Blind show. When I started it, I wasn't so sure how I would feel about it but it ended up being a really good exercise. It turns out it's not so easy to seperate shapes and values using only black and white.

Since it had to be black and white I wanted it to resemble an old photograph. So the girl sits posed with an expressionless face trying not to move and blur the picture. It's a little dark but fun and impossible and I like it.

Artist A Day

Today, I was very happy to be featured on Artist A Day. It's an awesome site that features all kinds of artists every weekday and allows people to comment and vote on the work. I mostly got a lot of good feedback and I hope everyone knows how much I appreciate the kind words. I was especially thankful to get a very thoughtful and inspiring email from Kim Huyett who saw my work on the site.

There were a couple comments where people questioned whether or not I could paint faces. I can't really blame them...the two images posted on the site were both paintings with hair blowing over and pretty much covering the faces of the girls in the foreground.

I guess it's always been a weird thing for me to have a face on a painting that I do for gallery work. It's not that I don't like painting faces. I love it. You can see, that in most of my studies, I will usually choose to paint ONLY a face. But when I paint pictures for a show, I'm always trying to kind of discover myself in my work. I use a lot of masks and at times hair to try and tell my own story and show how I haven't quite figured out who I am. Also, I want people to be able to relate to a painting. I guess I want people to be able to see themselves in the world I'm trying to create as well. So I suppose these faceless people can be anyone.

But, I am trying to move away from that a little bit. You will definitely see less covering up in the future.

Alright...I need to get back to painting for this black and white show. I hope you all can make it out this weekend. I saw Ken and Tom's work already and it's all really amazing. I seriously loved every piece they had. I'm really excited to see what the other guys came up with.

crow rides for life!

I did a few paintings for this show in D.C. earlier this year. I don't think they sold, but I got a lot of good feedback. Someone even tattooed this one on their back.

They were really nice to ask me first before they did it. I was totally flattered. The only thing I worry about is the regret of having my work stuck on their body some day. But they seemed to be happy with it, so I hope they stay that way. Respect to the tattoo artist, Chad Koeplinger at Tattoo Paradise out in Adams Morgan. Here's what he came up with.

Color Blind

I have the privilege of joining some amazing artists on the 29th of March over at the project gallery. The theme of the show is color blind, so all the work will be mainly black and white. It's going to be a lot of fun. Come check it out if you can.

When I was trying to think of ideas for the show, it was a little difficult. I knew I wanted to paint something. I didn't really want to do a drawing. But if I was going to paint, I wanted it to be black and white for a reason. So with the help of my awesome roomates, I came up the idea to do a scene that looks like it was captured with an old black and white camera. Or something like that...its not really supposed to be a photo..just old. Does that make sense? I just woke up and I'm not too bright in the first place, so I'm too good at explaining things. Anyway, here's the start of the painting. I would have taken more process, but the camera batteries were dead and I had to get new ones. Enjoy!

Sketch Theatre

There's this awesome website, www.sketchtheatre.com, that I was lucky enough to work with a couple weeks ago. You can pretty much get what the site is all about by the title. DEFINATELY check it out. They have alot of great artists that I love up on the site and I felt honored to be in their company. I was a little afraid when I went into it because I don't draw as much as I would like to anymore and I didn't want to emberass myself. But I had a ton of fun and I'm glad I got the chance to do it. Check the sketches out here and visit the website for more.

gettin crafty

I am way too lazy to make anything cool for myself to wear, but sometimes it's nice to do things for your buddies.

Here's some shoes I dolled up for a certain lady who likes old horror flicks.

It turns out she also likes Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.

King Colab

In case you didn't get a chance to come down and see our mess of a colab last night at Munky King, here is a little piece. At first I was a little worried. We didnt bring alot of paint and when we showed up, the canvases were 5 big doors. But we played around, had a few beers, and had a lot of fun. This section had me, Yoskay, PeekaBoo, and a little bit of tessar comin from the right side. I'll post more pictures if I can come by some.
