new sketchbook
My last sketchbook got swiped and I've been meaning to start up a new one. So when I came across this Sketchbook Project, I thought it would be a great opportunity. The idea is to get a ton of people from all over the world to fill up a moleskine and then send it back in. Anyone from a mother and her kids to a veteran artist can sign up. When all the books are back in they go on tour to different galleries and museums across the country where people can sit and thumb through them. I think it's a pretty great idea.
The only problem is that when the tour is over the books are entered into the permanent collection at the Brooklyn Art Library. I have a feeling when I'm finished filling up the book, I won't want to give it away. But we'll see. :)
There are different categories for each book. Mine is "Figuring you out". Seemed fitting.

a video about my apt that yoskay just happens to be in...
I forgot to post this awesome lil video my buddy Jeremy did for yoskay's show. If you haven't seen the show yet, check it out! I thinks there's only one or two paintings left available and few really cool sculptures.

Yoskay!
It's that time again for my good buddy Yoskay's solo show at LeBasse Projects. I really like the new work and the sculpture setup is going to be epic. If youre in the LA area, don't miss this one.

LeBasse Projects presents:
ʻFamiliar Strangersʼ
New work from Yoskay Yamamoto
June 12th – July 10th 2010
Artist reception: Saturday, June 12th, 7-10p
Los Angeles, CA – LeBasse Projects is proud to announce, Familiar Strangers, a solo exhibition from Japanese artist Yoskay Yamamoto. This will be the artistʼs third solo exhibition with the gallery, and will mark his most diverse body of work to date. The show represents a breakthrough in work from Yamamoto containing both painting and sculptural work. The show will reflect a continuation of intimate
statements of self-expression that began in his last series of exhibitions.
Yamamotoʼs previous exhibition focused on the artistsʼ external struggles and experiences while Familiar Strangers is inspired by a detachment from oneʼs inner self and the rediscovery of ones true nature. Yamamoto states: ʻI feel that I am always trying to fit in with others instead of finding or creating an environment that will naturally accept me as who I am. With the attempt and effort to fit in, I feel that we lose a sense of ourselves and become a familiar stranger within our own bodyʼ
Using some of his iconic characters, Yamamoto adds new depth including a thematic use of flowers in the work. Flowers have been chosen because according to Yamamoto. ʻ…they carry the essence of growth, but also have such a fragile state.ʼ The cycle of growth, blossoming and decay echo the circular nature of his previous exhibitions.
